How can I come over my fear of dogs?

Well, when i was about 4 my neighbors dog jumped on me and busted my lip. I guess you could cal it a mini-attack. But ever since then i have been terrified of dogs, large or small. Although there is a couple i have met that are very friendly.

But i need a way I can get over that fear with out going a therapist or anything. I could probly go to my school conselor though.

Anyway I need a simpler thing to do.
Those are all good ideas but im afraid to even get near a dog.How am I suppose to get one?

Rats Less Likely to Give You Rabies

You’re less likely to get rabies from a rat but the chances of acquiring the disease become greater with cats and other carnivorous animals like dogs and even bats.

These animals may be infected with the disease and transmit it among themselves or to humans by biting them.

Not all animals afflicted with rabies, however, appear “mad” or drooling with saliva, snarling and attacking everyone in their path. The virus which is responsible for the disease may appear in the animal’s saliva days before serious symptoms begin. At first, the animal may simply be restless and irritable before it suffers from hydrophobia (fear of water) and starts attacking people.

Aside from being bitten, a person can also be infected if the animal’s saliva comes in contact with an open wound or any break in the skin. The virus then invades the central nervous system, particularly the brain and spinal cord and travels to the salivary glands, making it possible for a person to infect others.

The symptoms of rabies fall into three stages. In the invasion stage, there is pain in the wound, fever, headache, rapid pulse, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia and phases of rushed speaking.

The stage of ex¬citation follows with mental excitement and the overproduction of saliva. Since swallowing and drinking become difficult and painful at this time, hydrophobia also sets in.

Finally, there is the stage of paralysis where a person suffers from hemiplegia (meaning one side of the body is paralyzed) or paraplegia (the lower limbs of the body are affected). If the patient ever reaches this stage, he or she usually slips into a coma and dies.

These symptoms usually occur anywhere from 10 days to a year. They appear earlier if the infected wound is closer to the brain. That’s why a bite on the face, head, hands and neck is considered more dangerous than those found in other parts of the body.

Since it is difficult to take chances, a person who has been bitten should confine the animal for at least five to 10 days to determine whether or not it has rabies. If the animal dies within this period, its brain should be examined for traces of the virus and a competent physician should be summoned.

My girlfriend’s mom is afraid of her pet cat and her son’s pet dog,and all other animals! What is this psychological condition of a fear of animals called ? The medical term?

How do I overcome my fear of snakes?

I love reptiles (including snakes). I love any type of lizard. I own a gecko and 2 beardies.
I know snakes evolved from lizards…but there’s just something about them that makes me feel tense. Maybe it’s their eyes? Or head? Or slippery look to their body without legs? I know a fair amout about snakes. I wanna be a reptile vet…but I can’t if I’m scared of snakes. What do they feel like? Do they bite? When and why do they bite? Would you have to seek medical attention?

How can I overcome this fear?

How do I overcome my fear of birds, rodents, and sometimes cats?

Hi,
I really have a problem with holding animals that really scratch or bite, and sometimes react easily to little sounds or movements, such as cats, rodents, and especially birds (because they are unpredictable and they move their wings a lot). I don’t meant that I don’t like these animals, on the contrary, I really like them a lot I just kind of have a fear of holding them. Please help me

Japanese scientists create mice with no fear of cats

Rather than flee or freeze when confronted with their feline enemy, the mice sniffed and even played with them, blissfully unaware of the potential dangers. Kobayakawa developed the fearless mice by shutting down receptors in their olfactory bulb – the area of the brain that processes information about smells – which would normally induce panic as soon as they get so much as a whiff of a cat.

 Children’s Fear Of Dogs

Dog lovers may not understand how some people can be afraid of dogs, but for many adults and children, it’s a very real and distressing problem.

Most of us would agree that we are frightened of a snarling guard dog, but those with a true fear of dogs are terrified of even a small fluffy pup. Even the sound of a bark can cause anxiety and distress.

As with most fears and phobias, fear of dogs usually starts in childhood. It may stem from being bitten by a dog, or even just being knocked down by an exuberant puppy. Sometimes a child will become frightened of dogs if they see their parent is anxious or worried around dogs – they may think if their parent is concerned, there is a real reason to be afraid.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why a child becomes afraid of dogs. One child may still love dogs after being bitten, yet another may become very fearful if a little dog jumps on them.

If a child is afraid of dogs, it can cause difficulties in their day to day lives. Dogs are everywhere and it won’t be possible to avoid them forever. It’s worth working with your child to overcome their fear.

A commonly recommended method of getting over any phobia is with a slow, gradual and highly controlled exposure to what the person is fearful of. Some children are just too frightened to be within sight of a dog. In this case, you can start with watching a television show or movie that shows friendly happy dogs. The old Lassie movies would be ideal for this.

When your child is happy and relaxed while watching a dog movie, the next step is to show them some baby puppies that are under 6 weeks of age. At this age, the pups aren’t jumpy or yappy, so shouldn’t cause any anxiety. Your child may then be willing to touch or hold a pup, but be sure to do this away from the mom, as she may be protective of her babies.

If all is going smoothly,  take your child to where they can see real dogs, butat this stage be sure  the dogs don’t have access to them. They can then get used to seeing dogs running and jumping, and can hear their noise without having to actually be too close to them. A great venue for this sort of exposure is a dog obedience competition. The dogs are all well trained and under control, so you’re not likely to have a dog rush at you.

The final step is to have your child interact with a quiet adult dog. Choose a calm breed such as a whippet or a cocker spaniel, and allow your child to stroke the dog when they feel ready to do so.

One warning – don’t be tempted to rush through any of these steps, or be in a hurry to solve this problem. If you do go too fast, and your child becomes fearful, you can set your progress back significantly.

Although the  fear of dogs can be  frustrating and may be persistent, in most cases you can overcome it with a slow and careful  exposure to dogs.

What does this have to do with being afraid of a horse? Your subconscious mind is the realm of your automatic responses. You have trained this portion of your mind to react fearfully in the presence of a horse even though there is no immediate threat. You have learned the fear of horses.
