I cannot explain to my family or employer that I panic in public places, such a work, but can go anywhere with a close friend of mine to a public place and not have very much anxiety at all?

you have a bit of agoraphobia, and a small dependancy issue.
get counselling. it’s not bad at a probono level for stuff such as this.

I have bipolar as well and know exactly what you are talking about. The best thing is to be honest with people. If the are your friends they will understand. If you cannot work try filing for disability but get a lawyer. It took me almost two years. I went all the way to seeing the judge before it was granted.

In the mean time start slowly. I hated the grocery store so I went at night when they were not as busy. I also got involved with activities I loved to do. I started with college chorus and seasonal work. Before long I became a boy scout leader and pageant queen. By rushing things you will only make your condition worse. Only you will know when your ready.

I get this…have been there too.

FIRST…talk to the doc about this if not already doing so.

SECOND…I hate to call this a mommy complex, but it kinda could be decribed like that. Every child feels comfortable in a store until they get sepereated from Mommy…then they freak. What you are doing is not much different. Try taking on small challenges on your own first like getting gas or a gallon of milk from corner store. Work your way up to larger things. Don’t just dive right into a Wal-Mart and expect to be ok. As for explaining this. Forgive me, but I thought you did well in your question…just say that.
